Nurturing a Healthy Home
2/18/2024 (Permalink)
As February unfolds, SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City is here to guide you through essential home maintenance tasks to ensure your living space remains a healthy and comfortable haven. Winter brings its own set of challenges, and proactive maintenance is key to preventing issues and preserving the well-being of your home. Let's delve into practical steps you can take this February.
Inspect and Clean Gutters: Winter weather can lead to debris buildup in your gutters. Ensure proper drainage by inspecting and cleaning gutters of leaves, twigs, and other obstructions. This simple task prevents water damage and protects your home's foundation.
Check and Seal Windows and Doors: Prevent drafts and conserve energy by checking for gaps and cracks around windows and doors. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any openings, enhancing insulation and keeping your home warmer.
Monitor Indoor Humidity Levels: Maintain optimal indoor humidity levels (ideally between 30-50%) to prevent mold growth. Use dehumidifiers in damp areas, such as basements, and ensure proper ventilation to reduce the risk of moisture-related issues.
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: February is an ideal time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed and ensure these life-saving devices are in proper working condition.
Inspect and Clean Dryer Vents: Lint buildup in dryer vents poses a fire hazard. Clean the lint trap after each use and schedule a yearly inspection of the dryer vent to prevent potential fire risks and improve efficiency.
Service Your HVAC System: Schedule a professional HVAC system inspection and service. This ensures your heating system operates efficiently, reducing energy consumption and enhancing indoor comfort.
Prevent Frozen Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas, to prevent freezing. Consider using pipe insulation or heat tape. Allow faucets to drip during extremely cold weather to prevent pipes from freezing.
Inspect Your Roof: Winter weather can take a toll on your roof. Check for missing or damaged shingles and address any issues promptly to prevent leaks and water damage.
Clear Snow from Outdoor Areas: Regularly remove snow from walkways, driveways, and outdoor structures. This not only improves safety but also prevents potential structural damage due to heavy snow accumulation.
Deep Clean and Declutter: Take advantage of the winter months to deep clean and declutter your home. Remove dust, vacuum carpets, and organize spaces. A clean and clutter-free environment contributes to a healthier living space.
Other Services from the Document Restoration Team

SERVPRO Properly Disposes of your Documents
Has your residence or business been a victim of a sewage or storm or flood water situation? Has your file room been damaged by water or smoke? Does your business or government organization need to properly destroy sensitive documents?
If so, you're in luck! SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City has excellent cleaning restoration services as well as certified destruction services for your important documents.
For damaged documents, we offer the following services:
Drying
In order to recover and restore your important documents, our Document Restoration Team uses Vacuum Freeze Drying, a process in which an item containing moisture is frozen and dried using vacuums and pressures to achieve a miraculous process called “sublimation”. It is the most efficient and effective way to salvage your water damaged documents.
Cleaning
To restore your documents to original condition, we also subject them to an onsite cleaning. This involves cleaning each document from front to back to remove any debris or surface particulate.
Sterilization
In a sewage or flood water situation, your documents are not only deteriorating but are also infected with many types of bacteria. In most storm situations you are dealing with this problem so most of the affected documents that you will encounter will be contaminated. If this is the case, then decontamination is always a must.
You might wonder how exactly we are able to disinfect and decontaminate documents or other consumer goods. To do this, SERVPRO uses Gamma Irridation. High-energy photons are emitted from an isotope source (Cobalt 60) producing ionization (electron disruptions) throughout a product.
In living cells, these disruptions result in damage to the DNA and other cellular structures. These photon-induced changes at the molecular level cause the death of the organism or render the organism incapable of reproduction. The gamma process does not create residuals or impart radioactivity in processed products.
Deodorization
Once paper has been wet, an odor can begin to form. Letting us deodorize your documents will reduce the odor, and, in some cases, almost completely eliminate it.
For certified destruction of documents:
We offer destruction onsite. Many businesses and government agencies have to dispose of counterfeit, faulty, expired, or contaminated materials. All entities need to be certain that their products and materials are properly destroyed.
The guarantee of certified destruction is to protect one’s liabilities, brand image, or proprietary information. We guarantee certified destruction to give you peace of mind that your documents are disposed of properly.
Other Services:
Digitization
Digitizing documents makes them easier to access as well as easier to store. We use state-of-the-art equipment to turn your paper copy into a digital file.
With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button.
If your file room was damaged by water or smoke or needs to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice in eliminating the need to have hundreds or even thousands of documents and records in storage.
So, just as SERVOPRO of Dyersburg/Union City specializes in the cleanup and restoration of commercial and residential property after a water, fire, or storm damage event, we also specialize in restoring, storing, and destroying your documents. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO’s corporate training facility to regular IICRC-industry certification, rest assured our highly trained staff is equipped with the knowledge to restore your property AND documents. Call us today at 731-627-6251 and let us make the damage look "Like it never even happened."

Spring into Cleaning! Utility Box Cleaning
4/22/2018 (Permalink)
This month, we’ve been talking about spring cleaning and some really great tips from our PROS on areas that we don’t typically associate with spring cleaning. Today we tackle another of those areas – the utility box. It’s an often over-looked area, but in the event of the unexpected the following tips can really save you from a headache.
- Tip #1: Be sure the box itself is clear of dust and debris
- Tip #2: Make sure the utility box is not blocked. In the event of an emergency you want quick, easy access to it.
- Tip #3: Be sure to check the labeling every spring. If you haven’t done this in some time, it’s possible that the label is peeling. Re-apply those labels and make it easier for service providers such as ourselves to get the job done.
That’s it for today, we hope you will join us for next week’s Friday lunchtime minute, where you get tips from the PROS. And remember, when the unexpected happens call SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City.

Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) app
It’s National Emergency Preparedness Month! In the context of hurricane Harvey, Irma or Maria, plus two destructive earthquakes in Mexico, we need to have a plan.
And although natural disasters are very scary. Experts estimate that only 5% of the disasters affecting businesses are caused by nature.
Man-made disasters have the ability to cause as much damage and be as scary. A pipe burst or a fire could happen to anyone anytime.
“Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.”

National Preparedness Month
8/29/2017 (Permalink)
Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can!
Plan. Plan. Plan. “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.” That is what National Preparedness Month (NPM) wants you to have in mind during this September 2017, particularly when we still have fresh in our minds the terrifying images of the aftermath of hurricane Harvey in Texas.
How to respond during an emergency? What to do when disaster strikes? We should all take action to prepare! Let’s get ready to help first responders where we live, work, and visit. Engage in preparedness actions at home, work, business, school, and place of worship.
Make a Plan for Yourself, Family and Friends
Other steps you can take could be flood-proof important documents by putting them in plastic bags to protect against water damage and keep some cash on hand in case of emergencies.
Making digital copies of important documents and save them on the cloud or a secure cell phone app could become handy in case disaster strikes. Flood insurance policies have a 30-day waiting period before they go into effect. Plan now for floods www.floodsmart.gov.
Natural gas leaks can cause fires following disasters. Knowing how to shut off utilities like gas, water, & electricity is key after a disaster.
Plan to Help Your Neighbor and Community
Almost half of Americans expect to rely on their neighbors after a disaster. Learn skills you need to help yourself and others until help can arrive. That was the case of Carolyn Salazar, a retired Texan nurse who spent the time hurricane Harvey was striking Texas this August checking in with other neighbors.
Keep your congregation safe. Make sure your house of worship has a plan for all types of emergencies.
Ready Business
Forty percent of businesses never recover after a disaster. Watch this video and plan head.

A Typical Day
12/22/2016 (Permalink)
Typical? What's that? In all actually, we normally start our day at 7:30am by having a informal meeting to go over the day's agenda. Our production manager decides which crew member goes to which customer and they are on their way. We often get "curve balls" thrown at us by receiving emergency calls. At that time, we contact our technicians to determine who can more easily and quickly respond to the emergency call. The technicians that are responding to the emergency call will come back to the office and make sure they have everything they need and rush to the customer's home. Then, they contact the adjuster (in most cases) and brief them on their findings. Then they're off to their next task.
Once they complete the initial visit, our office administrator creates a file for the customer and confirms that all the necessary documentation is on file and begins to write an estimate based on the data collected from the technicians.
