Commercial Storm Damage Tips

Commercial storm damage resulting from a tornado in Dresden, TN
As a business owner, storm damage can cause significant disruption to your operations and result in significant financial losses. Therefore, it's essential to have a plan in place to minimize the risk of storm damage and reduce its impact on your business. In this blog post, we'll share some storm damage tips for commercial and business properties to help you protect your business and minimize the impact of storm damage.
Reduce the Risk of Commercial Storm Damage
- Conduct a risk assessment: Identify potential hazards in and around your commercial property, such as loose roof tiles, trees close to the building, or clogged gutters. Take steps to mitigate these risks, such as trimming trees or reinforcing the roof.
- Maintain your property: Regular maintenance of your commercial property can help prevent storm damage. For instance, keep your roof and gutters clean and in good condition to prevent water damage. Repair any leaks or structural damage promptly to prevent further damage during a storm.
- Create an emergency plan: Develop a plan to protect your staff and customers in the event of a storm. Ensure that everyone knows the evacuation procedures and how to get to safety. Also, designate a specific area where everyone can meet in case of an emergency. FEMA's Preparedness Planning for Businesses page has hazard-specific step-by-step guides for your business to help you make a plan for any disaster you may encounter.
- Invest in storm-resistant features: Consider installing storm-resistant features such as impact-resistant windows, reinforced doors, and storm shutters. These features can significantly reduce the risk of damage during a storm.
What to Do During and After a Storm
- Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and stay informed about any alerts or warnings from the National Weather Service or local authorities. Using an app, like the ReadyTN app from TMEA, is a great way to have vital information in one spot. This information can help you make timely decisions about whether to evacuate or take other safety measures.
- Secure your property: If a storm is approaching, secure loose items around your commercial property, such as signs, outdoor furniture, and trash cans. Move valuable items to higher ground to prevent water damage.
- Document the damage: Take pictures and videos of any storm damage to your commercial property. This documentation can help speed up the insurance claims process and the commercial storm restoration process.
- Contact a professional storm restoration company: If your commercial property has suffered storm damage, contact a professional storm restoration company like SERVPRO Team Caldwell immediately. They have the expertise, tools, and equipment to handle any commercial storm damage and get your property back to its pre-storm condition as quickly as possible.
How to Make the Commercial Storm Restoration Process Quicker
- Contact your insurance company: Notify your insurance company of the storm damage as soon as possible. Provide them with all the necessary information, including photos and videos of the damage.
- Call a professional storm restoration company: Contact a professional storm restoration company like SERVPRO Team Caldwell to assess the damage and begin the restoration process. They will work with you and your insurance company to ensure that the restoration process is quick and efficient.
- Follow the restoration company's recommendations: The restoration company will provide recommendations on what needs to be done to restore your commercial property. Follow these recommendations promptly to ensure that the restoration process is as quick as possible.
- Stay in communication: Stay in communication with the restoration company and your insurance company throughout the restoration process. This can help you stay informed about the progress and any delays in the restoration process.
Reducing the risk of storm damage for commercial and business properties involves being prepared, creating a disaster plan, and working with professionals like SERVPRO Team Caldwell. By following these tips, you can minimize the impact of storm damage and make the restoration process quicker. Faced With Sewage Damage To Your Business?
3/28/2022 (Permalink)
Be sure to unplug all electronic devices after a sewage disaster.
Coming into work Monday morning to find sewage damage in your business or commercial property can be frightening and disgusting. You may be tempted to throw in the towel, but you'll need to be alert throughout the entire sewer cleanup process! Specific steps need to be followed if your sewage disaster is more than a simple floor leak. While SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City professionals can do the cleaning for you, there are three procedures you execute if you encounter sewage damage in your business.
- Address The Electronics
The first step you should take is eliminating any safety hazards near the sewer backup, specifically electronic devices. Without coming in contact with the sewage, all items or devices that run on electricity need to be turned off or unplugged as soon as possible! Surrounding areas could become hazardous if the water touches one of these items. Below is a brief list of devices to be mindful of in a business or commercial property setting:
- Computers/Laptops
- Chargers
- Video Equipment
- Office Printers
- Lobby/Breakroom Televisions
- Create Ventilation: Open Windows
After a sewage disaster, it does not take long before mold begins to grow and is discovered. To avoid additional damage to your business or commercial property, airing out your space is essential! Additionally, the fresh air reduces some of the unruly smell from sewage backflow and moisture in the air.
- Remove Endangered Items
All items that have come into contact with sewage should be left to the professionals to clean and disinfect. For all restorable items, SERVPRO professionals can properly sanitize and return them to your business. If the sewage water is continually leaking, it is wise to remove non-contaminated items from the affected area so no additional property is lost.
The sewer cleanup process at your business or commercial property will go smoother if you remember and execute these three steps! Knowing what you can do to help immediately following a sewage backflow could help save your business money and restoration time. When SERVPRO restoration experts arrive, relay everything you know about the situation. Our goal is to help you get back on your feet as soon as possible! Sewage damage is never pretty, but with SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City, it does not have to be debilitating for your business!
How To Prevent Secondary Damages To Your Commercial Property
3/23/2022 (Permalink)
When commercial owners don't notice a water intrusion immediately or fail to fix minor initial water issues, properties can develop secondary complications. Structural deterioration or black mold affects the water and can cause severe and costly damage. Property owners in West Tennessee should understand why secondary damage is so concerning and how to avoid these complications.
- Lack of Attention Leads to Mold
Fungal spores, or decomposers, are all around us. However, they become a problem for property owners when they come into contact with water. Liquid feeds the microbes, encouraging them to reproduce and triggers growth. The following conditions create the perfect environment for microbes to spread and demand attention…
- Lingering Puddles
- Plumbing Leaks or Drips
- Damp, Dark Cabinets or Closets
- Flooding
- High Humidity Levels
Address these issues as soon as possible to help prevent secondary damages from starting.
- Secondary Issues May Appear First
Signs of hidden moisture are typically only revealed after it penetrates through materials. Peeling paint, warped flooring, discoloration, spots, and musty odors are all early indicators of black mold.
In many situations, leaks occur out of sight in crawl spaces. Certified SERVPRO Mold Remediation Specialists can investigate the situation, and tackle the cleanup and remediation process.
- Focus on Drying and Gutting
Dealing with secondary damage can be a time-consuming process and requires patience. To prevent future property complications, the remediation and restoration process should be thorough. SERVPRO Professionals…
- Extract as much moisture as possible.
- Monitor dampness using a moisture reader.
- Place SERVPRO dehumidifiers to pull out the humidity from walls, floors, the air, and objects around the clock.
- Remove drenched items.
- Perform flood cuts on the drywall below the water lines.
- Toss contaminated carpeting and non-salvageable items.
SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City can help protect your commercial property from these secondary harms. The longer you wait to call, the greater the chance is to experience additional property loss.

Commercial Loss Levels
2/21/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City is “Faster to any size disaster,” including large commercial losses. Our goal is to provide the best services possible for our commercial customers. SERVPRO serves commercial buildings such as warehouses, retail stores, and schools.
Size is the key factor that is considered for a commercial loss. Typically, commercial losses are much larger than the average 2,392 square foot home. For example, a warehouse or factory can be in the hundreds of thousands of square feet. To further explain the different size categories of commercial losses, they are divided into three levels.
Commercial Level 1
Level 1 is considered a relatively small loss. Most level one cases are small retail locations, daycare facilities, small churches, or stand-alone offices.
Commercial Level 2
Level 2 is considered a substantial mid-sized loss. Examples of buildings that might fall under a level 2 size loss are mid-sized churches, schools, manufacturing facilities, small shopping centers, and multi-family properties.
Commercial Level 3
Level 3 is considered an extremely large loss. Examples of a level 3 commercial loss are large schools, hospitals, churches, universities, large warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.
It takes a specialized restoration company to handle a level 2 loss or higher. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City professionals are certified and highly trained to handle any size commercial building. Over the years, SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City has completed numerous large commercial losses. We are also fully equipped and on standby to assist you with our 24/7 Emergency Response Services. Our SERVPRO Professional's cleaning carpet for a local commercial office
Spring cleaning is just around the corner! After a long, cold winter, bacteria and other unwanted germs can start to pile up, not only in residential homes but in commercial buildings as well! A thorough commercial cleaning creates a safe place for employees to work and a more welcoming environment for potential customers! Below is a list of indoor commercial cleaning tips that can help your commercial building feel as good as new!
Indoor Commercial Cleaning Tips For…
- Dusting & Sanitizing
- Although dusting and sanitizing are things typically done year-round, there is never a wrong time to dust those out of sight - out of mind, difficult to reach places, and wipe down those high touched surfaces!
- Flooring & Carpets
- Foot traffic in and out of commercial buildings can leave behind a trail of dirt and grime. Carpets, in particular, show signs of debris build-up fast. Investing in a highly rated vacuum cleaner can help your carpet last longer and prevent further wear and tear over time.
- Purchasing strong cleaning products for tile or hardwood floors can also increase the longevity of your flooring. Thorough cleaning by professional carpet and floor cleaners is a great way to kick off the year and give your floors that extra shine and a new look!
- Reorganization
- At the start of every year, these two office upkeep tasks can help keep any office feeling fresh and clean. The first step is consolidating files from the previous year and placing them in an area that is easily accessible. This process will make information quick to locate and account for if anything might arise from last year’s business.
- The second step is to reorganize the office entirely. Hopefully, this is something that can be done periodically throughout the year. Tidying up an office can bring a breath of fresh air to the workplace, and a change of scenery is always a great way to keep a refreshing work environment! Varying types of cleaning processes are needed depending on your type of business. If you have any questions or need assistance, SERVPRO can help!

Sprinklers
10/15/2021 (Permalink)
Over the years, SERVPRO has helped commercial buildings like schools, hospitals, apartment complexes, nursing homes, and hotels with many restoration services. Most recently, we responded to a substantial water loss at a hotel. A sprinkler head in a suite became damaged, setting off the fire alarm and triggering the sprinkler systems. As the sprinkler system showered the rooms, it soaked into the walls and damaged twelve rooms, three floors, and the majority of a side stairwell.
Our SERVPRO team was on site quickly, placing furniture on blocks to prevent further damage, extracting the pools of water left behind from the sprinkler system, and calculating our equipment placement. Our equipment was designed and strategically placed in the affected areas for the most effective drying results. This specific process also removes offensive odors, moisture, and humidity from the affected areas.
SERVPRO is “Faster To Any Size Disaster,” with our emergency services available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! If you are a hotel manager and find yourself in a similar, unfortunate situation, please don’t hesitate to give us a call! We understand that guest’s comfort and satisfaction are your top concern. Our mission is to make it "Like it never even happened," for you and your guests!
The Domino Effect
9/8/2021 (Permalink)
"Faster to any size disaster!"
Our experienced team at SERVPRO has served our local community for over 30 years by being "Faster to any size disaster"! During the past 30 years, we have seen a great deal of damage to commercial facilities. Mold, fire, smoke, soot, humidity, and water are just a few of the disasters we restore for our customers. In particular, fire and water disasters are two of our most common restorations. They are more common because these two losses often go hand in hand and cause a domino effect.
For example, we responded to a dry cleaner’s urgent call after a pile of recently dried clothes melted a large clothes bin, causing it to catch fire in his warehouse. Thankfully, the fire was detected, and the sprinkler system was activated, containing the fire and preventing it from consuming the rest of the facility. What was left behind was a great deal of damage and soot, but that is not all! Water from the sprinkler system had traveled throughout the entire facility, causing massive pools of water and drywall damage!
Our SERVPRO team quickly jumped into action by using our special equipment and certified cleaning expertise! Not only did we remove all of the standing water and smoke, but we also restored the drywalls to their previous condition. We used the dehumidifier to remove the lingering humidity leftover from the water damage as well! No matter the size of your disaster or loss, know that SERVPRO is always willing to help you make your disaster "Like it never even happened."

When It Rains It Pours
3/19/2021 (Permalink)
We are so blessed to have gotten so many calls when we had the freeze back in February 2021. We were able to help so many business and homeowners. One call that stands out was a local business that was surprisingly the first call during the storm. We received the call that a pipe in the ceiling had burst. They had turned off the water but the pressure in the line had caused so much damage. They thought they had the pipe fixed and turned the water back on and a different spot burst from where it had frozen while the water was off. They had a huge mess. The temperatures had been so low that this happen 4 times all because the water kept freezing in the line because we had to turn the water off. The entire office had been wet at one point or another. We knew just how stressful that situation was of the business but we were so happy that they trusted us to just keep working even if the water just kept coming. Our goal is “Like it never even happened,” even if it feels like it will never stop.
What Is Considered Commercial?
3/9/2021 (Permalink)
When people talk about commercial jobs I use to just think that was factories and places like that. I never thought of commercial being hospitals and clinics. But it makes sense.
We have been so lucky to have really great relationships with various local businesses, hospitals, and clinics. Being able to work with so many clinics and hospitals is such an honor. We have many IICRC Certifications which hold us to a very high standard when it comes to cleanliness and restoration.
In our business, you cannot cut corners. Cutting corners could lead to further damage or future problems. We are the best in our industry because we hold ourselves to the highest of standards. This is why we are trusted my many hospitals and clinics who have a reputation for being very clean places.
Hotels have water damages too.
2/12/2021 (Permalink)
In the past few months more and more hotels have been calling us for many of their needs. These needs range from carpet and tile cleaning to water losses on a new construction and everywhere in between.
Recently, a contractor left a water valve open on a new construction. This cause water to affect all 5 floors of this hotel. Luckily, they called us and we were able to get there ASAP. We were able to save much of the new materials because they acted so fast in calling us. They didn’t try to do it themselves to “save money.” They waited for us to get there to make our evaluation and start our process.
Many people try to start the water mitigation themselves and that they don’t realize is that they could be costing themselves more money in the long run.
Best advice for a water damage
- Get the leak stopped, sometimes you need a plumber.
- If there are electrical outlets affected you will need to turn off the power.
- Turn off the water if the water damage is from a water line in your home.
- Always avoid the puddles of water as you could fall and or they could be electrically charged.

3/16/2020 (Permalink)
Let SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City help you clean your home or business.
Unless you live under a rock you have heard about the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. We know from the media this virus is contagious. At this point the best way to stay healthy is prevention and taking precautionary steps.
SERVPRO professionals are highly trained in the highest of cleaning and sanitation standards. While SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City does not claim to prevent coronavirus, we at SERVPRO perform clean up and bioremediation in accordance with guidelines put out by the CDC and local authorities. SERVPROXIDE, is an EPA-certified, hospital grade disinfectant that has shown to be effective against similar viruses on hard, non-porous surfaces. We have successfully tested this product against many other viruses that are similar to the coronavirus, but currently we have not tested any product against this particular strand of the virus. While proactive cleaning does not protect again future possible contamination, it is also helpful to know that any virus can live on hard, non-porous surfaces for a few days if not cleaned and sanitized properly.
We have a few helpful tips to help try to keep you safe and healthy during this pandemic:
- Always wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. (Sing Happy Birthday in your head or out loud whatever you feel comfortable with. Just because this is a pandemic doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun)
- Wear gloves if you are out in public and want to take extra precaution. (especially at places you serve yourself)
- Keep your hands off your face. By touching our faces we are making it easier for the virus to find it’s way into our mouths.
- Don’t eat or drink after anyone.
- Stay away from highly crowded or populated areas.
- Clean all surfaces in your home or work station. (hard surfaces- countertops, toilets, showers, etc. soft surfaces- couches, carpets, bedding, etc.)

SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City wants to share these tips from FEMA. You can try to fight a small fire only if:
- You have alerted others in the building that there is a fire
- Someone has called the fire department
- You are physically able to use a fire extinguisher
- The fire is small and contained (like a wastebasket)
- You are safe from the fire’s smoke
- You have a clear escape route
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: SERVPRO of Dyersburg/Union City suggests you remember PASS:
Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
Sweep the nozzle side to side

Important Tips to Protect Your Business Records
10/8/2018 (Permalink)
Here some more helpful tips on keeping your business secure ahead of a tornado. Keep these points in mind when protecting your business records and inventory:
- Make sure you are aware of the details of your flood insurance and other hazard insurance policies, specifically which items and contents are covered and under what conditions. For example, if you have a home business, you may need two flood insurance policies, a home policy and a separate business policy, depending on the percentage of the total square footage of your house that is devoted to business use. Check with your insurance agent if you have questions about any of your policies.
- When you identify equipment susceptible to damage, consider the location of the equipment. For example, equipment near a hot water tank or pipes could be damaged if the pipes burst during an earthquake, and equipment near large windows could be damaged during hurricanes.
- Assign disaster mitigation duties to your employees. For example, some employees could be responsible for securing storage bins and others for backing up computer files and delivering copies to a secure location.
- You may want to consider having other offices of your company or a contractor perform some administrative duties, such as maintaining payroll records or providing customer service.
- Estimate the cost of repairing or replacing each essential piece of equipment in your business. Your estimates will help you assess your vulnerability and focus your efforts.
- For both insurance and tax purposes, you should maintain written and photographic inventories of all important materials and equipment. The inventory should be stored in a safety deposit box or other secure location.
- Periodically evaluate the building envelope to make sure that wind and water are not able to penetrate the building. Do regular maintenance and repairs to maintain the strength of the building envelope.

Protecting Your Business from Tornadoes
10/5/2018 (Permalink)
Tornado season is upon us once again. We often think about securing our homes but many business owners don't have a tornado plan for their business. SERVPRO cares about your home AND business. Here are some tips offered by the Environmental Protection Agency on how to back up your business on-site records.
Most businesses keep on-site records and files (both hardcopy and electronic) that are essential to normal operations. Some businesses also store raw materials and product inventory. The loss of essential records, files, and other materials during a disaster is commonplace and can not only add to your damage costs but also delay your return to normal operations. The longer your business is not operating, the more likely you are to lose customers permanently to your competitors. To reduce your vulnerability, determine which records, files, and materials are most important; consider their vulnerability to damage during different types of disasters (such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes) and take steps to protect them, including the following:
- Raising computers above the flood level and moving them away from large windows
- Moving heavy and fragile objects to low shelves Storing vital documents (plans, legal papers, etc.) in a secure off-site location
- Regularly backing up vital electronic files (such as billing and payroll records and customer lists) and storing backup copies in a secure off-site location
- Securing equipment that could move or fall during an earthquake
- Prior to hurricanes, cover or protect vital documents and electrical equipment from potential wind driven rain, which may breech the building envelope through windows, doors, or roof systems.
BENEFITS OF UTILIZING THIS MITIGATION STRATEGY Helps to prevent the loss of essential business records and files, and protects raw materials and product inventory Helps a quick return to normal business operations Helps to prevent the loss of customers to competitors.
